The Spring Season is scheduled to start at then end of January and the Downtown YMCA, please check our website for the exact date as we finalize the contract.

Due to the success of the Skills clinic, we have decided to include this as part of the Recreational division, which will run from 11:00 to 1:00 where 11:00 to 11:30 will be skill training. Competitive and Power divisions will run the same as a draft format, from 1:00 to 3:00 and 3:00 to 5:00 respectively. Ratings will apply for Competitive and Power divisions. Ratings will be done during the open play sessions. You must have a Competitive or Power rating to play in Competitive and a Power rating to play in Power.

We are excited this Spring to have two Miss LSVA events. On February 6 we will have Miss LSVA 2010, to elect the 2010 crown holder and then on March 6 we will have Miss LSVA of the decade, where the title holder from each year of the millennium will compete. Both events will be held at South Beach from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Please invite all your friends to attend as these are fundraisers and of course will be the events of the season. Anyone wanting to compete in 2010 Miss LSVA or any former title holder for Miss LSVA of the decade contact me at president@lsva.org.

And please lend all your support to us as we host the Lone Star Volleyball Classic XX1. This held Easter weekend April 2nd and 3rd. Please consider forming a team a participating in this fun tournament or help out with the setting up and running the tournament during the weekend. But plan on coming out and support your Houston teams competing. Contact me at president@lsva.org or look at our website www.lsva.org for more information.

I hope to see you out this Sunday at Meteor and if not there then on the courts this Spring!

Greetings LSVA members and friends!

We have completed 3 weeks of the Summer Season and we are looking forward to a fun and competitive 4 weeks ahead. We have a few exciting announcements to make.

For the Elite and Power divisions:  In preparation for the upcoming NAGVA tournament in San Antonio, teams participating in the tournament may play as a complete team on Friday evenings (August 17 & August 24).   Players without a team will be put in a pool to form teams. If you bring a team, you must have a complete team of at least 6 players with a team composition that fits your division.  If you do not have a complete team, those players will be placed in the pool to form teams.

For the Recreational division:  On Fridays, a free skills clinic hosted by Coach Ricci Ruiz will take place from 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm.  The clinic develops basic skills of passing, serving, hitting and setting.  We hope this will help players improve their skills and confidence.  Following the clinic, recreational open play will resume from 8 pm – 10 pm.

Determining Your Division of Play:  Player safety and the integrity of the level of play at each division are our primary concern. It is for these reasons LSVA requires a rating for each player. As an organization associated with NAGVA, we use NAGVA ratings to determine your appropriate division of play. The Elite and Power divisions are meant for players that want to compete at a tournament level. To play in these divisions, a player must have participated in a NAGVA tournament and therefore have a NAGVA rating. This rating will be used to determine a players division. Elite is for players with a rating of BB or higher while Power is for players with a rating of B or higher.

The Recreational and Competitive divisions do not require a NAGVA rating. Recreational is for beginners while Competitive is for those with a basic knowledge of volleyball yet little knowledge of team strategies. Players may play down a division, but not up.  If a player does not have a NAGVA rating, then the officers will determine one for the individual.  New member evaluation will occur at the Recreational court from 7:00 pm – 7:15 pm.  If you disagree with this rating, we ask that you achieve an appropriate rating by attending a NAGVA tournament.  Note that this system will be in place for the Fall Season when we start league play, so please understand your rating if you are planning to play in the Fall league.

Upcoming Fall Season:  We are finalizing the dates and location of the Fall Season.  Tentatively, the season will begin the weekend following Labor Day.  We are also in the process of organizing a social to kickoff the Fall Season. Keep your calendar open for the second weekend in August. I can tell you that there will be lots of sand involved!

Again, I thank everyone for their patience, input, and understanding as the new officers and board members complete the Summer Season of 2009.  I truly hope each of you have enjoyed your time with LSVA this Season and hope you have met some new friends and learned some new volleyball skills.

Thanks,

Steve Ruimveld
